Do you need to read the Harker & Moriarty books in order?

Technically, Strange Beasts is book one in the Harker & Moriarty series, and Wayward Souls is book two. However, you don’t need to have read Strange Beasts first to enjoy Wayward Souls! Library Journal’s review of Wayward Soul’s says that fans “will enjoy diving deeper into Sam and Hel’s world, and new readers will find plenty to keep them hooked.” Readers of Strange Beasts should be pleased at the increased depth given to characters and relationships introduced in book one, but as a kid who grew up in the library, reading series entirely out of order, I made sure Wayward Souls would work as an entry point for new readers as well.
